Gully Erosion threatens seven Edo communities

At least, seven communities in Iluleha, near Sabongida-Ora, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State are under threat of gully erosion that has destroyed the only road linking the community with the rest of the state. There are similar threatening gullies ‎in Iruekpen and some other areas in the state.The Guardian gathered that the gully in Uzebba area is measuring between about 50ft deep and 35ft with several fingers and no fewer than eight houses have been destroyed in the area. The seven-affected communities-Ikpeyan, Oromen, Okeagho, Avbioghola, Ivbiodohen, Oah and Iloje, may soon be cut-off from the main town of Uzebba, as Okpuje road that linked the communities has almost been eroded. Ogoni clean-up commences before fourth quarter

The long-awaited Ogoni land  clean-up will commence before the fourth quarter, Director General of National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), Peter Idabor, has assured. He said relevant officials from Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) will be drafted for the exercise. Idahor stated these yesterday in an exclusive with our correspondent in Abuja. According to him, the federal government has decided officials from the Federal Ministries of Environment, Finance and Petroleum Resources among others will make up support staff for the Hydro-carbon Pollution Remediation Programme (HYPREP), which is the implementing body. He said it was agreed that there would be no vacancies for other positions on the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) project. Police parade suspected militants arrested in Ikorodu

5 suspected militants have been arrested and paraded by operatives of the Zonal Intervention Squad attached to Zone 2 command Onikan Lagos. The suspected militants were arrested on the 17th of April following a fierce gun battle with the police at Ogijo in Ikorodu. The Zonal Police PRO SP Dolapo Badmos who paraded the suspects before newsmen today, said the AIG in charge of Zone 2 Adamu Ibrahim mni gave an order that Ikorodu and it's environ should be rid of criminal elements. This necessitated the intensified patrol within the creeks and coastal line within Lagos, that led to the arrest of the militant group. She added that the AIG has directed that the suspects be charged to court at the conclusion of investigation. Among those arrestedand paraded were; Tochukwu Ohanezim aka Almighty King of the Jungle; Oluwadamilare Ojo, Fatai Karounwi aka Kokoro, Akeju Adeniyi aka Tablet, Oyebanji Agboola and Innocent Ikechukwu. 

Oyo warns residents against dumping waste in Ogunpa River

Oyo state government has warned residents who dispose wastes arbitrarily and traders selling under high-voltage power cables to be careful during this rainy season. The warning was contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Toye Arulogun.  This became necessary in view of the Ogunpa flood disaster that claimed so many lives in the state on August 26, 2011.  The commissioner also said that the State Government had begun rehabilitation of additional seven roads in the city.  The roads are Iyanganku/NTC road, Eleta/Odinjo/Muslim road, Beere/Oranyan/Orita Aperin road and Ogbomoso High School/Baptist High road.  The government noted that the roads are either being rehabilitated, renovated and reconstructed through its agency; Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency (OYSROMA), disclosing that Ariyo Box culvert at Olorunsogo/Akanran road, Iyana Church/Oyeniyan along Iwo road/Olodo road and Ologuneru/Abanla/Alafara road are a...

Egbekiri Community Protests Neglect by NAOC

The people of Egebekiri community in Nembe Local Government Area, Bayelsa State on Thursday protested Nigerian Agip Oil Company’s (NAOC) neglect of the community. The residents took their protest to the Obama flow station operated by the company, disrupting production in oil wells 5, 7, 9 and 12. Chief Karibi MacDonald, a community leader in Egebekiri, explained that the company has not paid residents of the community any form of royalties or related fees since beginning oil exploration there over 40 years ago. Mr. MacDonald said they were tired of writing letters to NAOC officials seeking intervention only to be ignored. The community leader maintained that a Supreme Court judgment of July 13, 2007 had confirmed community residents as the legal owners of the land area hosting the oil fields. Lagos-Ibadan Residents Plead for Compensation over Demolition

Lagos – Ibadan Residents of Agbado Railway Station Community in Ogun State have appealed to the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) to compensate members of the community whose houses are affected by the ongoing demolition.  The demolition of houses along the rail route is to pave way for the construction of the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge rail. Police Visits Ishawo Community in Ikorodu, Begins Demolition of Hideouts

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command​ on Wednesday stormed the riverine area of Ishawo Community in Ikorodu, Lagos, to commence total demolition of shanties within the area, used by militants. Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, told newsmen that a combined team of the State Marine Police, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the anti-kidnapping squad as well as local vigilante group, had arrested 13 suspected kidnappers. 53 Arraigned for Gay Marriage

The Police, on Wednesday, arraigned 53 persons before a Magistrates’ Court in Chediya-Zaria, Kaduna State.  The suspects were allegedly arrested during a gay marriage. The prosecutor, Sgt. Mannir Nasir, said the accused were arrested on April 15, at Zaria Motel and were being charged for conspiracy, unlawful assembly and belonging to a gang of unlawful society. He said the offences contravened Sections 97, 100 and 197(a) of Criminal Procedure Code [CPC]. “On April 15, 2017 at about 2100 hours a team of policemen led by DSP Muhammad Lawal-Mashi arrested and brought to police station 53 persons. “The arrested persons included; Jibril Abdullahi, Sagir Abubakar, Anas Mohammed, Mustapha Ababukar, Musa Ibrahim and Suleiman Usman among others, all of various addresses. “Information reached the police that these group of persons conspired to celebrate a gay marriage at Zaria Motel between one Faruk and Sanusi both at large,” the prosecutor said.
